Applicant tracking systems
Compact is a single column of real text with standard headings, no tables, text boxes, icons or images (except an optional photo, which this template doesn't use). That's the format parsers find easiest. What an ATS actually does.
Fitting one page
Compact uses smaller margins (11 mm top and bottom, 13 mm sides), a 9.6 pt base size and tighter spacing. In our PDF tests the same CV took about a quarter less paper in Compact than in Clarity (all ten example CVs, A4 and Letter). If you still spill onto a second page, the builder tells you how many lines over you are. How to cut a résumé to one page.
